We paid for five weeks (35 days) at a VRBO in Sudbury for work. We arrived on Sunday. It rained Tuesday night. Wednesday morning the roof was leaking and there was water dripping through the light fixture.
We left immediately because that's a safety & fire hazard. Ten hours later owner says he fixed the leak after it stopped raining. I've fixed many roof leaks. There's no way to know that where his handy man applied roofing tar is where the leak is. Also, just because it stopped raining doesn't mean the the roof doesn't leak anymore or that the ceiling light fixture is not wet.
Owner won't refund for the remaining days, and VRBO is believing the owner fixed the leak and backing the owner's refusal to refund
The 55MB mp4 won't upload, but you can see the water on the light fixture. Also, the video is on reddit:

Recommendation: Stay away from VRBO
We have a VRBO rental in Sudbury, ON from Sunday 07 June to Saturday 11 July. We arrive on Sunday. Tuesday night it starts raining. I wake up Wednesday morning to water on the living room floor. Water from the roof leak is dripping through the ceiling light fixture. We call VRBO and they call the owner.
Risk of electrical fire is a safety hazard. We're lucky a fire didn't start while we were sleeping. We move out immediately and want a refund.
VRBO insists on giving the owner 12 hours to respond and 24 hour to fix the problem. Can't be certain that any roof leak is repaired until the next rain. We're not going to be the guinea pigs. We move out immediately.
Owner complains that we didn't contact him first. Well, he didn't respond to VRNO's call for 4 hours anyways. Then the owner says it's fixed, but it's only his word. VRBO accepts the owner's word that it's fixed, and refuses to refund our money.
Finally, we draft and send a terse letter to VRBO citing their Terms and Conditions, specifically that they will refund in cases of floods and health and safety risks. We're waiting for a response.
I draft a description of these events to send to CBC News, but my wife wants to wait until VRBO responds to our letter before going to media on a neighbourhood electrical fire hazard.
BTW, we called the Sudbury Fire Dept but they're not interested in it unless there are flames.
