Clairol review: I put on Clairol Nice and Easy Med Ash Brown and it turned out jet black!!!

I have been using Clairol Nice and Easy for about 35 years and have always been very happy with it. As I have got older I have gone for a lighter colour, Medium Ash Brown 5A. I was meeting friends for dinner and going on a hen party in a week so got the box out of the cupboard. I put it on and waited the 25 mins as usual went to rinse it off and noticed the bottle I used to put it on had turned jet black. I rinsed my hair and looked it the mirror and it was jet black, I was horrified. I didn't use the conditioner that locks in the colour. I had to continually shampoo my hair and used half a bottle of shampoo and hoped it would wash out some of the colour. It is now dark brown. I was thinking I would have to cancel all my arrangements as I couldn't go out with jet black hair. I am 73 and it wouldn't look good. It is dark brown after spending so much time trying to get some of the colour out. I was able to meet my friends but I am now scared to ever use Nice & Easy again as it was not easy at all! Photo is the colour after shampooing it for about 8 or 9 times, still too dark so now washing it every day until it is the colour that is suitable.
