Electric Toothbrushes - Do You Get What You Pay For?

Most of the time, "You get what you pay for" is true. But does it apply to electric toothbrushes? Maybe...maybe not. You may just be surprised. Learn which toothbrushes work best and which ones are worth the price.

Types of electric toothbrushes

Before comparing and searching for the best electric toothbrush, it's important to know a few things. First, not all toothbrushes are alike. When it comes to electric models, you have three types.

Sonic toothbrushes vibrate side to side. Spin brushes have bristles that rotate in a circular motion, first one way, then the other. Other toothbrushes have bristles that pulsate in and out. Most toothbrushes are electric and have rechargeable stands but some cheaper models run on batteries.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on an electric toothbrush, the Spinbrush Pro Clean Sonic by Arm & Hammer is good toothbrush for the money. At only $15, this toothbrush is effective, has dual cleaning action, and has bristles that spin in circular motions.

This toothbrush is less expensive because it runs on batteries, but is a good deal for the money.

Although more expensive, the Oral-B Professional Care electric toothbrush claims to remove 99.7% of the plaque on your teeth. This brush has spinning bristles, a timer, 4 brushing modes, floss action brush heads, a rechargeable handle, and a charge level display. Brush head refill packs are easy to find and are inexpensive at $13 for three new heads.

Phillips Sonicare

The Phillips Sonicare is one of the priciest electric toothbrushes on the market at $119.00, but according to Consumer Reports is worth the money. This toothbrush not only removes plaque, but has three modes of cleaning for maximum cleaning, sensitive cleaning, and massage.

The built-in timer lets you know how long to brush each quadrant of your mouth improving the chances of getting your teeth as clean as possible. It also includes a lithium battery that lets you brush for two weeks without recharging. Also included for this price, you get a brush head, travel case, recharger and a 2-year warranty.

Which electric toothbrush is best?

For the best plaque removal results, these three electric toothbrushes are the best available. Which is best for you depends on how important features and price are to you. Decide which is most important for you -- price or features - and choose the electric toothbrush that best fits your needs.
