Money and Time Saving Tips for Lawn Care

Money and Time Saving Tips for Lawn CareLawn care tips, sales on flowers, specials on lawnmowers and fertilizers, and pesticides. Yep...it's that time of year. Spring brings with it a sense of new beginnings and with it are our hopes and dreams of a beautiful lawn. Who wouldn't want to have a lawn that looks like a golf course green? Just about everybody would. But who wants the lawn to monopolize all of your time and money?

Tips for Lawn Care

The truth is we want the beautiful lawn without spending our entire summer working on it or spending all of our vacation money on it. Right? Well, here are some lawn care tips to help you get the lawn of your dreams without all that time and money.

Tip #1 -- Fertilize less

Your first impulse to a green, luscious lawn is to fertilize. Before you spend a lot of money on fertilizer, buy yourself a cheap do-it-yourself soil tester from your local lawn and garden store. You'll save money doing it yourself and after the test is complete, you'll know exactly which type of fertilizer to buy and how often to fertilize.

Fertilizer can get expensive. This saves you money by not buying unnecessary amounts of fertilizer and the wrong type of fertilizer.

Tip #2 -- Mower maintenance

One of the best things you can do for your lawn is to make sure your mower is running right and has a sharpened blade. You should sharpen and balance your blade three times every mowing season. It's also good to have a second blade on hand while the first blade is being sharpened.

Mowing your grass with a dull blade damages your lawn and causes stress for the grass. Like humans, stressed out grass leads to disease and sickness.

A sharpened and balanced mower blade will also make your lawn look better by cutting sharply and evenly giving it a more professional look.

Tip #3 -- Grass seed

When it comes to grass seed, there are two things to remember:
  • Plant the type of grass for the region of the country you live in keep your lawn thick. Depending on where you live, you need to plant either cool or warm season grass. Cool season grass does better in the northern states and warm season grass grows well with soil temperatures over 70 degrees.
  • The second thing you need to remember about grass seed is to sow it thick enough to produce a thick lawn. If your lawn has thin or bald spots, the weeds will happily fill up that spot for you. By keeping your lawn thick, you'll save yourself the trouble of having to deal with weeds and spending the money on weed killers.
Tip #4 -- Water properly

The two biggest mistakes when it comes to watering your lawn is watering at the wrong time and overwatering. Most people water their lawns when it is convenient for them -- not their lawn.

This is understandable of course, but the best time to water is in the morning. This allows the water to get to the roots of the grass before the sun evaporates it away. Watering at night causes mold and diseases you'll have to deal with later.

Your lawn needs approximately 1" of water per week. It is best to water deeply so the roots can get the water they need. Avoid frequent, short watering times. This keeps the grass green, but doesn't build strong roots that your grass needs.

Follow these four tips for lawn care. Not only will you be saving time and money, but you'll soon be enjoying that lawn of your dreams.
