I purchased three Porterhouse steaks at ShopRite under a digital coupon promotion that clearly stated the discount applied for up to 5 pounds. I clipped the required digital coupon electronically, yet the discount never came off at checkout.
After waiting over 12 minutes at Customer Service, the first representative had no idea how to handle the issue and literally walked away to help another customer while I was still standing there. A second employee finally tried to assist and contacted the store manager, who incorrectly claimed the promotion only applied to one Porterhouse steak.
At that point, I said I wanted to return the steaks because I could not afford them at full price. To prove my point, I went to the kiosk and loaded the exact same coupon onto my sister’s card. When I asked for the steaks back so I could re-purchase them properly, the employee refused to hand them back to me. I then took the steaks myself and proceeded to the cashier while she followed me to the register, watching me as though I were trying to steal them.
The best part? The system immediately applied the discount to all three steaks — proving I was right the entire time.
Instead of apologizing, the employee approached me and said, “You should not be getting the discount.” That level of disrespect, poor training, and outright accusation toward a paying customer was insulting and unacceptable.
I spend roughly $1,400 a month on groceries, and after this experience, ShopRite has permanently lost my business. I’ll gladly drive an extra 10 minutes to shop at Stop & Shop, where customers are treated with basic respect and employees actually understand their own promotions.
I would rate them a negative zero, but that is not an option here.
Recommendation: Shop Somewhere Else! Consumers work too hard for their money to spend it at a retail establishment known for false advertising, poor customer service, and humiliating treatment towards loyal customers!!
