I have found a tenant who is taking over my lease. But they are still charging me $500 which was not mentioned in my original signed agreement. I dont think I should be charge, as this is also against the law. I have paid all rent and also new tenant paid the rent and application fees.
‘a reletting fee is not considered a penalty but rather liquidated damages to compensate the landlord for having to find a new tenant because you broke the lease. If you paid all the rent owed under the lease in one lump sum, the landlord should not be allowed to charge you a reletting fee. But if you moved out early, the landlord probably has the right under the lease to charge you a reletting fee, so long as the fee is reasonably related to the landlord's costs in securing a new tenant.’
